Athletic Involvement

Ever since I could walk, sports have been a passion of mine.  Along the wins and losses and aside from the bumps and bruises, sports have taught me many valuable lessons.  I can attribute my time-management skills to high school sports where I had 2-3 hours of practice each night after school before the AP and honors homework load.  I acquired perseverance from the necessity of pushing through, even when I didn't want to.  Among other traits, skills and lessons learned from sports are:
  • Hard-work ethic - You have to play until the final buzzer goes off.
  • Humbleness - You can never take an opportunity for granted.
  • Respect - You must respect others, whether that be your coaches or other players (sportsmanship).
  • Responsibility - You must be accountable and prepared to fulfill the responsibility to yourself and your teammates.
  • Management - You should be prepared to lead others, with your performance and your attitude.

Baseball

Baseball has been my favorite sport for as long as I can remember.  I played all levels, starting from Tee-Ball and ending up at the collegiate level.  After arriving on campus at the University of Minnesota, I tried out and made the Club Baseball team.  This team allowed me to continue with my passion for baseball, Baseball is a game of inches, and it just goes to show that you need to be concise with your actions in life in order to be successful.  Yet, I would say that the most important lesson I have learned from baseball is that "you can't control the uncontrollables"; you can only control your attitude and reaction.

Soccer

Soccer is a sport of which I did not play my entire life.  I played Pee-Wee soccer when I was at the ages of 5 and 6, and then stopped in order to play football and then more baseball, etc. I was never really interested in soccer, until my sophomore year when I decided to join the team.  I joined at this time in order to have a source of conditioning leading into the basketball season, but ended up  becoming a captain on my high school team. Joining soccer and indulging myself into the universal sport taught me that I can do anything that I put my mind to.

Basketball

Basketball was a sport that I enjoyed for quite some time, starting back at the age of 6 and continuing until my Junior year of high school. I decided not to play basketball because my Junior season was a rough one:  coaching issues, bench time, politics, drama, you name it.  Yet, despite all this and the temptation to quit, I stuck out the season because I would have been giving up on myself if I took the easy path of quitting.  I value myself on having strong morals and sticking true to who I am, and quitting is not in my repertoire.  Despite the rocky ending, my basketball career was one of hard-work, perseverance, and personal enjoyment.
