Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Mu Sigma Chapter - Minneapolis, Minnesota
Member since: Spring 2016

Becoming a member of Phi Gamma Delta was an extremely beneficial experience that allowed for me to grow stronger and challenge my perspectives. I learned the importance of morality, striving for excellence and persistence through the culture provided by the Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Minnesota. Throughout my experience, I was involved with many community and social events, in addition to time with brothers, that I believe, all reflect the best of what I have become.

Sport Management Association - University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
Active Membership: September 2015 - May 2018

Sport Management Association is a student-run club at the University of Minnesota that includes students interested in pursuing a career in the sport industry.  The platform of the club is networking, as credited by the biweekly meetings that feature guest speakers from different local sport companies.
I became a member of Sport Management Association upon my arrival at the University of Minnesota and am greatly appreciative of all that the club allowed for me to do.  I was able to speak one-on-one with industry professionals, tour state of the art facilities, and even acquire an internship.
The first meeting for the 2015-2016 school year included the Membership Services Manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ashley Heinlein.  By attending this meeting, I was able to talk to Ashley and set up a personal tour of the team's new offices.  From there, I established a connection that allowed for me to obtain an internship position with the Timberwolves.  This experience showed me the importance networking and I never would have been in the place that I am today without attending that first SMA meeting.

DECA is a business-oriented club that allows students to employ their leadership and business skills in school involvement, community involvement, and also competition.
I participated in DECA for all four years of my high school education and cannot emphasize enough how much it has helped me as I enter into business industry.
I became heavily involved with DECA, whether that was through competition or through our high school's chapter.  For my senior year of high school, I was a part of the officer team with responsibilities of:
  • ¨Breaking the Ice¨ at Chapter Meetings
  • Planning & Organizing any social event
  • Communicating to the student body regarding upcoming events
Being an officer in DECA really allowed for me to grow as a leader and further strengthened my interest in the business world.
DECA competition is an extraordinary experience at any level, whether that be Districts, State, or Internationals.  Over my four year, I attended many conferences (WI Leadership, Central Regions Leadership, etc.) and competed in all four levels of competition.  What I really enjoyed about DECA competition is how it incorporates the material learned in class into real-world situations, then allowing for participants to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities.
Shown below is a picture of the 22 competitors (I being one of them) from Badger High School for the International Career Development Conference in  Orlando, FL (April 2015):  an experience that I will never forget.

¨The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.¨

Near the end of my Junior year of high school, I was selected into the National Honor Society.  Inducted in that May of 2014, I was gracious to have been chosen to be a part of such a profound and positive organization.
At Badger, our NHS chapter was involved with many different events, such as Bake Sales, Toy Drives, Mix-It-Up Day, and more.  The extent of NHS is much more than the prestigious title; it is about the values employed and preached to others.  The values that I took away from the National Honor Society are self-realization and community involvement.  As supported by the amount of time I spend involved in community programs or events, I believe that it is our unspoken duty to serve our community.  NHS was an excellent recognition that also allowed for an increase in community involvement among the other students selected.

Life of an Athlete is a program that promotes smart life choices by living the  ¨Life of an Athlete¨.  Relatively knew at my high school when I first joined as a freshmen, I witnessed and helped the progression of this program within Badger High School.
Finding Life of an Athlete was a life realization for me and through this program, I have built my character and morals. I choose to live and promote healthy life choices, to advocate community involvement and to be who I am today.
Badger High School's Life of an Athlete is phenomenal in regards to the resources available:
  • Free Shirts, Sweatshirts & other gear
  • Funding for healthy snacks at meetings
  • Financial assistance for group trips and perks.
  • Photography skills to complete LOA Posters
Yet the perks are not why I chose to participate in Life of an Athlete.  I was a part of this program because I truly believe in the message(s) that it is trying to imprint on others.  A lot of times, those others are younger students from feeder schools within the area.  Badger LOA has worked with many events at different schools as a source of community involvement in order to preach upon the youth in the time of fragility in the mind.
LOA stands for healthy lifestyle choices (like proficient amount of sleep and proper nutrition and zero substance abuse).  This repertoire of morals is employed in community events, such as the Star Center 5K where (shown in picture) LOA volunteers campaign for the spread and improvement of these morals onto the youth.
